Merck is a global research-driven pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets vaccines and medicines to address unmet medical needs.
I was contracted by Merck to build a linux cluster that provides bioinformatics services to scientists in the company's research division. The cluster is based around the SEQUEST software application, which correlates mass spectrometry data with protein sequences. This project required the installation and configuration of a 14 node HP cluster, including its operating system, specific computational biology software including SEQUEST, and a host of custom scripts. The scripts created and/or customized for this cluster provide the ability to start and manage searches against large protein databases, syncronize the protein databases with sources from other biotechnology information resources online, and visualize the results of the database searches through a secure web interface.
