Trybsz, Poland
The St. Elizabeth’s church in Trybsz, Poland has some amazing polychromes that have survived from the 16th century. An interesting part of one of the walls was this image of Mary riding a crescent. Jessica seemed to know the story from Revelations where Mary, the crescent moon, and this beast all come together like this. All of the imagery was very apocalyptic but I thought this was pretty unique. I always find it interesting when Christian lore mixes with monsters and symbolism carried over from its pagan predecessors.
Check out this amazing panorama of the outside of the same church.

I too, visited this church in May of 2005 and have some very nice photos of the art work and surroundung ground and community. Trybsz was the home of my grandfather. What was your primary interest in this ancient church?

Hi Joseph.. I was working with Handshouse Studios – we brought a group of students from the Massachusetts College of Art and Simmons College to Poland and the Czech Republic to document wooden religious structures from this period, among other things.
